Worldcup: Princess Sofia Trophy

Being hosted in the renowned bay of Palma de Mallorca, the first worldcup of the year had some tricky conditions for us at stake.

Starting off in strong shifty offshore breeze, the wind swung round to two days of strong onshore breeze, only to come back to an incredibly shifty, patchy and gusty medal series on the last day. Throughout all these conditions I felt extremely confident and was honored with an incredible 4th place in total 🤘🏽🎉
Finally, after finishing my Master Thesis I was able to focus on kiteracing and I’m super glad that everything worked out right away. I know I still have a lot to improve on, but for now I’m just hyped about my solid performance throughout the entire competition. 🤙🏼🤩

Training

Sardinia - Tarifa - Palma

First of all, I’m very proud and happy to announce my final graduation as a Scientist in Renewable Energy. Having submitted and successfully defended my master thesis I hope to contribute to a greater and greener future and fight the climate crisis.
On doing that I am even more motivated to promote my greatest passion, driven by wind! Right now the training schedule brought me to Palma after visiting some of my most favourite venues on Sardinia and around Tarifa. Spots where I learned and progressed so much during the last years that visiting them has become very special to me.
Soon, all racers with gather here on the Baleares for great battles around the bay of Palma to succeed at the Princess Sofia Trophy!
Ready for the action???

World Championship

From 11th to 17th October, the greatest competition in foilracing history was held at the Sardinian beach of Torregrande. A fleet of 89 male and 49 female athletes gathered to crown the world champions of the fastest sailing-fleet in the world.

For me the competition, despite “just” a 14. place, was a full success. My speed and tactics prooved to be able to achieve Top5-finishes, which I had’nt expected before the comp! It really motivated me for the next years to come and pushed further towards Paris 2024.
Facing the final crunsh-time of my Master-Thesis in Renewable Energy, I´’m yet not able to train as much as desired, however sailing among the top riders already is a great motivation for next year, when Racing will be my FULL FOCUS!

Stay Stoked, Stay salty! Cheers

German Championship

I MADE IT!!!! 🥇🥇
After 12 amazingly close races with my teammate @kiterflo, I am suuuperrr stoked to finally claim the German Championship Title! 🤘🏽🤘🏽😍
What an extraordinary stunning and mental event, with lead-changes every single race! The neccessity to cope with very high pressure on spot, definitely helps me for future competitions. Why high pressure?? After fighting out 11 races, it really came down to race #12, that decided for the German Champion! After I rounded the upwindmark just in front of Flo, I knew I had to keep him behind for the rest of the race and cover. Despite heavy currents and strong windshifts, I was able to do so and claim the Championship Title! Thanks for the great races Flo! 🤙🏼
Also I must thank all my great and Long-Time supporters! Without you this had never been possible!!

Race and Coach

After putting in some effort in the windtunnel to push my Master-Thesis forward, it was time to head South towards the beatiful venue of Gizzeria-Hangloose Beach (Italy). Despite very little training, the Worldcup started with a BANG! My first-ever bullet (1.!!!) in a World-Series event! Still stoked about it!
Finally, after some ups and downs, unfortunate plastic bags and crazy port starts, I am OK with my 12. place overall. Seeing the 100-person-fleet at this crazy level makes foilracing the most actionpacked watersport in the world!
But not only I was racing in Gizzeria: After Casper Boumann had left to Tokio for coaching at the Olympics, he trusted me with the task to be the competition coach for the Dutch-Foilracing youth at the Youth World Championship, which followed my own World Series Event.

Knowing the competition area, the local weather pattern and the courses very well, I was trying to help the boys pushing to their limit. After being their technical coach quite some times now, it was a great pleasure to also help them tactically and eventually do the right calls at the right time.
In the end it was a full success! One bronze Medal for Jis, a Top5 position for his younger brother Duuk and great results through the entire competition by Sam and Joris!! You rock BOYZ!!!

Sardinia Training ´21

In Febuary the Headcoach of @TeamNL, Casper Bouman, invited me to another training with his Team on the beatiful island of Sardinia. Our goal is to bring the next generation of kitefoilers to a new level of riding and ready them for the Olympics 2024. It has been my pleasure to train these young guns, analyze their riding-style, manoeuvers, strong- and light-wind capability and help Sam, Annelous, Sven, Joris and Roderijk improve their skills.
It is truly astonishing to see this homogeneous, supporting and joyful team aspiring and me bringing them to the next level. Casper was not only able to form a group of advancing athletes, they have become great friends and have been tought respect, patience and the relevance of taking responsibility. It’s stunning to see what an amazing team spirit has developed, although kiteracing is a single person sport. Their skills are constantly improving and with an ongoing progression and positive spirit like this, I am sure a Dutch spot in Paris ’24 is in sight.

European Championship - Team Relay

In total 19 Teams took part at the first multi-day European Championship in Team-Relay Kiteracing at the austrian Lake Traun and showed the world how fast and exciting sailing can be. The format -being olympic in Paris ’24 for the first time- celebrated its debut in front of the 1691m high Traunstein and impressed both spectators and coaches as well as competitors, regatta crew and sailors.
With speeds beyond 70 km/h on their hydrofoils, the British Team of Connor Bainbridge and Ellie Aldridge won the competition in an impressive finale. Jannis Maus and Alina Kornelli, her having started kiteracing just 1.5 years before, still managed to proceed to the semifinals and scored a strong 7th place. “I am super satisfied with my performance on this competition. We were able to leave behind many riders that had been in front at the individual European Championship and improved by every race”, says Maus. Because of the fact that -due to the Covid-Restrictions- only top Teams registered for the competition, the German Team was thriving for a Top10 result. “Leaving behind even more teams is both impressive an extremely motivating for the future.”
“This disciplin is incredibly exciting and allows any spectator an actionpacked dive into the world of kiteracing” -Phil Robertson, Helmsman at SailGP_ESP and coach of both german Teams. Especialy the big share of newcomers is very promising and will catapult the fight for Gold at the Olympics 2024 in Marseille to a new level.
